School's History

The Columbia School of Broadcasting was founded in 1964 in the State of California. Since that time, Columbia has trained over twenty thousand men and women around the English and Spanish speaking world in the field of broadcasting. Columbia began enrolling students in the greater Washington Metro area during January 1977. Since that time many of our graduates have gone on to work in radio and television stations in the Metropolitan Washington, D.C. area. Many graduates have decided to relocate to various areas of the United States as well as abroad.

In early 1992, the Washington Communication Center became the national headquarters for the Columbia School of Broadcasting and began operations as a proprietary school holding a certificate to operate from t he Virginia Board of Education. Today, Columbia trains students in our headquarters facility in Fairfax, Virginia as well as throughout the world with our distance education courses in Radio Announcing (English and Spanish) and Sportscasting Play-by-Play Broadcasting. Columbia is owned and operated by Columbia School of Broadcasting, Inc., a Delaware stock corporation.

In 1999, Columbia became the first school in the state, and one of the first schools in the nation to offer a course in Internet Broadcasting. We continue to improve our training curriculum to ensure that the skills you acquire through our institution are applicable in the modern broadcasting industry.
